On
todayÕs date in 1227, Mongol conqueror Genghis Khan died. He is an ancestor of the young man my wife was considering
marrying when I met her June 17, 1962.
Boy, am I glad I came into the picture just in time! We will celebrate our 47th
wedding anniversary this September 30th!
On todayÕs date in 1587, Virginia Dare became the first child of English
parents to be born on American soil, on what is now Roanoke Island, North
Carolina. I wrote a
little article about
her and the Colony a few years back, which exposed me to some interesting bits
of information about that early English presence in America. On VirginiaÕs 3rd birthday,
her grandfather, Governor John White, returned to Roanoke on his second
expedition from England, only to find no one there, and no one ever was found
from that settlement.
On todayÕs date in 1920, the 19th
Amendment to the Constitution, which guarantees the right of
women to vote, was ratified when Tennessee became the 36th state to approve
it.
Enjoy history,
